The charm of a guest house.
Most people start thinking about their next holiday in Provence shortly after returning from their last, and often begin the search for a new destination on the internet. Whilst searching, one will undoubtedly encounter the phenomenon, the “chambre d’hôtes”. Literally translated, it means room (chambre) for a guests (hôtes). It began in France when the government permitted house owners to rent out some rooms to generate extra income. These guest houses became more and more luxurious with the enormous increase in tourism. As a result, new regulations were created and today a chambres d’hôtes can provide a maximum of 5 rooms, otherwise the owner falls under the legislation for hotels. You
will nearly always find a swimming pool to share with the other guests, a
room with en-suite bathroom and you will eat a hearty breakfast.
Unfortunately it is
forbidden to provide guests with other meals. However chambre d’hôtes
owners have found a ingenious manner to by-pass this rule by simply
inviting their guests to share their evening meal. This is called a “Table d’hôtes” where
the guests sit at a large table and eat what is on the menu that day. The
normally
comprises of a first and main course with wine to drink, followed by a
dessert and coffee or tea to finish. and a coffee. During the day you can either explore the
pleasant surroundings
or just stay at the chambre d’hôtes, with a good book, perhaps lounging by the pool. Your
host will always be happy to provide you with information about the
locality and
answer your eventual questions. A tip from your author: moving from one chambre d’hôtes to another is a
delightful way to discover Provence.
